dear son #3

Dear Nathan,

I haven't written you a letter since before you were born. I wrote to you then on a lazy Wednesday in July, seventeen days before you entered the world.  I was so excited to meet you and hold you and shower you with affection as soon as you arrived.

I wasn't able to cuddle you until many hours after your first breath, but I still clearly remember the moment I first heard you cry from beyond the surgical sheets. Your strong shout pierced the chaos of the operating room. The doctors, nurses, midwives, they all said how strong you must be to cry so quickly and without any help, despite your difficult journey to get here.

I can still see this strength in you every day. In the way you lie on your back, giggle, and throw your heels forcefully onto the floor; in the way you screech loudly to get my attention; in the way you get so excited that your whole body shakes. I hope this strength stays with you throughout your life. I hope you master physical activities that challenge you, entertain you, and keep you healthy.

I also see tenderness in you. You are sensitive to sounds; you stare wide-eyed at the people and objects surrounding you; you hold on tight when I carry you from room to room.  I hope that you always remain soft and gentle. I hope that your tenderness does not get hardened by life's turbulence and unease and that when life does become difficult, you react with affection instead of anger.

Soon I am going to have to share you. In a few weeks I am going back to work and you are going to nursery. Someone else is going to take care of you all day long, you will not be all mine anymore. I am sorry that I won't be able to provide you with the individual love and attention you deserve. But your nursery is a lovely place. You will play and make friends; you will experience new things; you will start to become an independent little man.  And I will be there for you every single night when you get home.

I love you.

dear son #2

I can't believe you are nearly here now! You are due in 5 days time, but I have a feeling you will be late. Either way, within the next 2.5 weeks I will be able to hold you in my arms and give you an enormous cuddle and kiss! I can't wait.

From the kicks and movements you are making I think you will be a strong little boy. I hope that you are healthy and happy and that you enjoy your first few weeks in the world.

Your dad and I have finished your nursery and we have all the things ready for your arrival. I hope you like your room. I have a feeling that the two of us will spend loads of time there playing, relaxing and reading stories.

I have signed us up for a few classes already which I hope you will like. We will go to Baby Yoga classes on Mondays and Baby Sign Language classes on Fridays. You will be able to meet other babies and have play time. I have also met some other mommies with babies the same age as you. Who knows, you might be friends with them for a very long time.

I have also started to look into nursery schools for you for when I go back to work. We are thinking about a Montessori nursery and also the nursery where daddy works. We will take you to visit them when you are here and will make sure to pick the very best place for you.

I love you so much already!

Love and kisses, xoxox

dear son

You are starting to get really big now and growing every day. I have started to feel your feet nudging my rib-cage at work. Don't worry though, I like feeling you move because I know you are doing well.

Daddy and I have already bought you some stuff for when you arrive. Yesterday Daddy went to the grocery store to buy some food and came back with a huge pack of bibs for you too. They are so cute, I'm sure you will love them!

I can't wait to meet you in a couple months and see your face for the first time. I'm excited to see what color your eyes are and what your hair will be like; but most of all I can't wait to give you a big kiss and a cuddle and to know that you are safe.

Daddy and I haven't decided on your name yet but we have a few names that we like. I'm sure we will agree on something soon.

We have booked your first airplane ticket already! You are going to go to Florida in November for your first-ever Thanksgiving. You have a lot of family members in the USA who are looking forward to meeting you.  You also have a lot of family here in the UK who want to meet you, especially your grandparents, aunts, and uncles - you will be a very loved little boy.

Love and kisses, xoxox
